My name is Katie Nimmo, and I own a property in Woolston/Opawa which is subdividable. I own half and two friends who are based overseas own the other half. It is 820 square meters and in an L2 zone. My dream is to build two eco-town houses on this property. My thinking behind this is that we desperately need to reduce the ecological foot print of our city, not just build eco-houses on lifestyle blocks. All standard housing stock in cities should be water and energy efficient and everything else efficient! And beautiful and functional and built to last for generations. I work for Community Energy Action, and have worked for the NZ Landcare Trust. I am passionate about community-based sustainability initiatives and have wanted to build an eco-house since I was a teenager. It could be quite a while before this dream could happen, because we have owned the property for just over two years, and it will take a while before any of us will make an acceptable return on the investment based on the current ownership structure. By this I mean it could be between 5-15 years before we look at subdividing or selling. It is possible the other owners would be keen to build these town houses along with me, but it is equally possible that they may want at some stage to exit our property sharing arrangement for their own very good reasons at some stage. If they do want to exit, it is unlikely I could achieve this dream by myself. I would love to find a way to keep this dream alive, possibly with other people who have a similar vision for themselves. The houses would not have to be identical, but it would make sense to share in the intellectual, design, compliance, and technological costs involved in building such houses. I would love to hear from you if this is something that catches your interest. I can't gaurantee anything, but something else even more wonderful might come out of this idea that anything we could ever imagine.
